MAGGIE: Is it raining? I hate rain.

LARRY: What?

MAGGIE: Rain. I hate it.

LARRY: No, no, no. You hate your rain, you hate Ohio rain. You don't hate desert rain.

MAGGIE: What's the difference?

LARRY: Desert rain is like gold, because it never happens. But Ohio rain is pretty much like pennies. It's worthless.

MAGGIE: Even if it is desert rain, it still means I'm going to get wet walking to my car. I don't even own an umbrella.

LARRY: Yeah, I have to go cover an outdoor game right now, so I'm not happy about it either.

MAGGIE: Ah-ha!

LARRY: Yes. Rain sucks.

Yes!

My co-worker just shot me a mean glare and said, "You are not seriously bobbing your head to 'Owner of a Lonely Heart,' are you?"

Well, yes. In fact, I was.

But that killed my plans for air guitar.

Even More Film Fest

Tuesday, August 28, 2007
Oh, I am so tired. Last night was the fifth night in a row of film fest parties. Afetr tonight, I'm done. I swear.

Dancing

Last night I told a few people that I can't do this anymore.

"You can sleep next week!" said one of the cute filmmakers.

But that's what I told myself LAST week.

Reel Life

This weekend is all about the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films, which is one of my favorite events of the whole year.

Short Fest means I'll be watching lots and lots of movies ... about three minutes at a time. (Actually, they smoosh them together in programs of about 80 minutes each. But it makes me laugh to think of filing into a theater for a few minutes, then walking back out and doing it all over again.)

There are also a lot of post-film parties during which giddy young filmmakers get drunk and schmooze and flirt. It's really a lot of fun.

Like this morning, for instance. I was at my desk and received a 10 a.m. phone call from a bunch of directors who were hanging out by the pool at the Viceroy. "We were just wondering if we could buy you a couple drinks," said the guy on the phone. I couldn't go, but hey -- it's nice to have the offer.

In between movie programs, I'm also getting together with my friends to make gazpacho and chiles rellenos while indulging in some totally girlie TV. And possibly some homemade sangria. (We were originally thinking bloody marys, but that would be tomato overkill with the gazpacho, no?)

And, after my whirlwind trip back home, I need to actually relax -- so I'm also hoping for a little alone time. I'll probably hit the trails in the mountains and hike until everything makes sense again.

The photos are clicky if you want to see the rest of them. I am slowly but surely uploading them.

Actually, it was an overwhelmingly emotional trip home. I attended the funeral of a person I loved and respected. I saw my mom in the nursing home for the first time. I made friends with a charming New Yorker. I touched base with the many amazing friends and colleagues I had in Cincinnati. And I watched my best friend in the world transform from my old college buddy into a lovely, sophisticated, beautiful bride.

More later after I process everything.

In the meantime, congratualtions Shannon and Brad!
